Wake Up Wells
Wake Up Wells Community Day
Wake Up Wells is a three-part cross-community project supported by the Dean, the Mayor, City, District and County Councils, Heritage Partners, Festivals, Schools, the Connect Centre and the Chamber of Commerce. We have broad representation on our steering committee and our aim is to Connect, Collaborate and Celebrate our community. Initially we sent out questionnaires to residents over the summer in both paper format and online. We then held a stakeholder conference in the Town Hall in early October with over 90 people from across the community attending to discuss the questionnaire findings and devise an action plan.
The third part of this project is to celebrate all that is going on in Wells and raise awareness of the amazing diversity of activity.
Wells Cathedral has gifted us the building, which will have the pews removed, as a venue for our ‘freshers fair’ where local groups are being offered a stall to tell people what they do and invite them to get involved - and there will be performances throughout the day from local choirs, drama schools etc.
We would very much like there to be a celebration of all things for young people. We have invited Resilience Voyage to come with their ‘drugs bus’ to raise awareness around drugs and are inviting urban and graffiti artists to host a creative workshop, Wells Football Club have expressed an interest in doing mini sessions in the Recreation Ground - other sports clubs could use the field for similar events. We will be inviting young people to perform in an acoustic open mic area in the Cathedral or Wells Museum.
To wrap up the day we are planning a lantern procession starting at 6pm. We are collaborating with the Shepton Mallet Lantern Festival who have advised us on how to run it and who will join the Wells procession as a cross-community event.
The Wake Up Wells survey this summer
and our conference in October identified that, although there is plenty going
on in the community, people are unaware of just how much. We want to use the
day for the people of Wells to sample some of those activities. We
have also created a beautiful calendar of events which will be available from
retailers across the city.
